What happens when your stuff breaks? A consumer’s guide to repair, replacement, and legal protection

It’s 11 p.m., your one-year-old washing machine has thrown an error code, and you are doing what any “sane” person does at that hour- typing your rage into a search bar.

A few threads deep, past the bots and the affiliate links, you find someone who has clearly stood exactly where you are standing, and just like you, they have encountered an unwarranted dose of slacktivism:

“Why wouldn't they keep selling us shit (and making more money) if we keep buying it?”

Frustration aside, that stranger has a point, and the point has a name. Cory Doctorow calls it enshittification - the slow slide of products from good to worse as the incentives around making them change. Steel gears become plastic. Parts that once came out with a screwdriver are buried somewhere only a few rare technicians can reach. Design gets optimized for cost, speed, and replacement rather than repair or durability.

And yet, when something does go wrong, the story is not quite as simple as “your product was built to fail”. Technically there still are manufacturer warranties, repair programs, replacement parts, technicians, and a growing push for consumers to have more say over what happens after the sale. The problem is that figuring out which of those actually helps you can be almost as frustrating as the breakdown itself.

That decision has gotten genuinely harder as repair costs climb and replacement parts become harder to access. But it is far from hopeless.

So, let’s look at what’s changed and your options for the next time something you paid good money for decides it has had enough.

Before you ask what a repair costs, ask whether it’s even on the table

Last fall, iFixit sat down to open Apple’s new AirPods Pro 3, armed with heat guns, fine tweezers, and years of practice. The result was a $250 gadget reduced to shards, because there was no gentle way in. Apple glues the battery into the casing, so reaching it means heating, prying, cutting, and hoping the thing survives the surgery.

The in-ear AirPods have been scoring zero out of ten for repairability year after year.

It’s easy to dismiss the issue as just the price of tiny gadgets. But the same thinking has been leaking into the bigger, more expensive things you expect to keep for years, which changes the first question you should ask:

Can it be fixed at all? As one Redditor shared:

“I am a hardcore DIY person. I have kids. Neither of them have any DIY skills at all. I believe this goes to the complexity of the products consumers are purchasing coupled with their lack of serviceability.”

Come to think of it, they aren’t really complaining but making a more matter-of-fact observation.

If the AirPods story is any evidence, it shows that a component that once lived behind a removable panel gets tucked deeper inside, glued to its neighbors or buried in an assembly that has to come apart before anyone can touch it. The repair is still possible in a technical sense. But the economics tells a very different story.

That is where a technician can open a machine, find the dead component, see exactly what needs replacing, and still tell you the job makes no sense. Bonus tip- in most cases it even voids your warranty.

Parts pairing can also tank your chance to repair

Now this is a genuinely grey area.

Suppose you have the part in your hand, and it is genuine, boxed, and ready to be installed. Slot it in and the device can still decide it belongs to the wrong machine. In industry parlance, this is parts pairing, where software links a component to a particular device and can trigger warnings or disable functions after an otherwise successful hardware replacement.

The number of serialized iPhone parts rose from two in 2015 to nine by 2020, with many of those parts difficult or impossible to replace without losing functionality. The same pattern has appeared beyond phones, including game consoles and even agricultural equipment.

So look at everything that can happen before a single repair price gets compared.

See how accessible the part is within the device and whether a replacement part is still sold. Then check whether your device will accept or be compatible with the replacement, and whether a technician can actually get the job done.

What can a repair realistically cost?

For decades, the golden rule was blissfully simple: if a fix costs more than half of a replacement, toss it. But then some researchers ran the numbers on over 528,000 products and decided that flat percentage needed a reality check. Once you weigh age, original price, depreciation, repair cost, and replacement pricing, you start to wonder why anyone ever trusted a single number to begin with.

Because the same repair can look like two very different decisions depending on what it’s buying back.

A washer owner went through this exact conundrum:

“My washer stopped working over the weekend, and a local repair company (small, very trusted) told me it would be $732 for parts and labor to fix it… approximately the cost of a new machine. My machine is from 2009 and has given me absolutely zero issues until now.I am really torn because I’d love to not waste the current machine and all the parts that do work — but is it financially smart to spend that much on a 16yo machine?”

Flip it around, and the quote itself can be the con.

Another homeowner was told $375-plus for diagnosis and labor, shrugged, bought the actual part online for $13, and finished the job with their daughter in forty minutes. Same category, entirely different economic universe.

Then comes the cost of downtime

This is the phantom cost no shop ever prints on an invoice: downtime. Picture waiting nearly two months while parts trickle in and technicians cycle through your laundry room. Or a brand-new dishwasher that quits after three months, followed by five weeks of scheduling runarounds before the maker finally concedes. At that point, “$300 fix versus $1,000 new” is measuring the wrong thing. The real question is what havoc can two months without a working dishwasher can create in your married life.

The law is finally on your side

Now seems like the appropriate time to deliver some good news in this story, though it comes with rather more paperwork than fireworks.

As of January 2026, roughly a quarter of Americans live in a state with an enforceable right-to-repair law, and once Connecticut and Texas switch theirs on later this year, that share climbs past a third. Nine states now cover consumer electronics, and a handful go further, with Oregon and then Washington banning parts pairing outright, so a working part can no longer be locked out by software.

Look closely at what all of that actually wins you, though. Access. The right to buy the part, hold the manual, borrow the tool, and choose your own shop.

This summer the FTC forced a $99M (plus interest) settlement on John Deere, prying loose the tools and software farmers had long been denied to fix their own tractors.

It even reached the McFlurry machine. McDonald’s ice cream makers break so reliably that a website, McBroken, exists purely to map which locations are down at any given moment. In 2024, a U.S. copyright exemption made it legal to bypass those software locks for repair, giving owners and technicians more freedom to fix the machines themselves. The shift is subtle but important - repair is moving from something manufacturers control to something owners have more say over.

Hold the celebration, though, because the current runs both ways.

In August 2026, Sony emailed PlayStation owners a friendly copy of its terms of service, the fine print reminding them that the games they thought they owned are licensed, not sold, landing right as the company confirmed it will stop printing discs altogether by 2028. The quotable reminder here was “You will own nothing.”

But while repair is officially your right, nobody ever promised it would be cheap.

It can still leave you paying for the part, the technician, the shipping, and the hours spent waiting for someone to show up. It also cannot conjure a discontinued component back into existence. Manufacturers do not have to provide a part they no longer make.

So who foots the bill when your rights are in order?

Right-to-repair answers: “can I get the means to fix this?”

A manufacturer’s warranty answers, “will the maker cover this, and for how long?”

But an extended protection plan answers the one that actually keeps you up at night: “when the bill comes, whose problem is it?”

With extended protection, you can shift some of that repair risk away from yourself. Instead of crossing your fingers that your fridge, laptop, washer, or grill behaves itself once the manufacturer’s coverage ends, you have a backstop when something goes wrong.
