Back in 2016, The Guardian reported on a nightmare terrorizing robot vacuum owners: the “poopocalypse.”
Yes, it’s exactly how it sounds.
Robot vacuums would roll through pet waste and track what a buyer deemed a “25-foot “Jackson Pollock poop painting” across entire homes. When asked about it, an iRobot spokesperson candidly admitted, “Quite honestly, we see this a lot.”

Poopocalypse was hilarious for everyone except the person cleaning it up. And it also proved a crucial point for the vacuum industry - a simple bump-and-turn navigation wasn’t going to suffice for real-world usage anymore.
The industry evolved since then. What you buy these days are evolved robot vacuums - machines that inhabit rolling computers packed with AI cameras, LiDAR mapping, and mopping systems. And owners have grown absurdly attached to these smart helpers - dressing them up for Halloween, taking them on trips, and naming them gems like Dustin Bieber.

But all that intelligence comes with even more strings attached. Because the smarter the technology you put into a machine, the more things can go wrong. And when something does, most buyers frustratingly agree:
“Basically I just want something really dumb and bullet proof.”
Where a traditional upright vacuum stopped working because a belt snapped or a motor wore out, a modern robot vacuum can have problems with its navigation sensors, obstacle detection, moving parts, water system, or some undecipherable AI mechanism.
And that brings us to the question every owner eventually asks from their warranty when their little robot refuses to contribute its daily share of chores:

For a household helper we welcome like another member of the family, a robot vacuum’s cry for help can be cryptic. But once you look at the mechanics inside, the patterns become clear enough.
The brain gives out first
One of the most common ways for a robot vacuum to die is for its navigation to quit. The spinning LiDAR turret on top, which maps your living room, is a moving mechanical part doing delicate optical work. Some owners report it dying within months of purchase.
And yes, it stings - because that navigation system is the entire reason you paid $800 instead of $80. A replacement sensor module can run $120 to $300 before the repair guy has even left his home.
The body wears down despite the solid exterior
If you think a sturdy exterior means you’re safe from old-fashioned vacuum failures, think again.
Suction motors still lose power, wheel motors still seize, and brush drives work through thousands of cleaning cycles. And most owners look at loss of suction as a clogged filter problem. But sometimes, the motor itself simply stops working.

When you finally click “Buy Now,” you assume you’ve just purchased years of freedom from manual labor. What the product listings conveniently omit is that you’re practically adopting a tiny, artificial brain with its own set of mechanical neuroses.

So how do the major brands stack up when those neuroses turn into a repair bill?
iRobot - Roomba
iRobot has long treated the Roomba like a collection of replaceable parts, which can be very convenient. A wheel starts acting up? On compatible models, you can swap the whole wheel assembly with a screwdriver. The casters and cleaning head can get the same treatment.
After he was faced with a $185 official repair quote, one owner fixed the issue himself with a $20 replacement wheel.
But there is a catch. Newer models aren’t modular and do not come with replaceable parts:
“This is a new roomba i5+ made in August. I see they are combining their old version with that new “essentials” model and now you can’t replace the wheels/chm/side motor. What’s up with that? Are these things just disposable now?”

Moreover, iRobot’s warranty is limited to one year and excludes normal wear and tear and fluctuations or interruptions in electric power.
So yes, DIY repairability is fantastic right up until “do it yourself” extends to paying for the parts on newer models.
Roborock
Flagship Roborock models carry LiDAR sensors, multiple drive motors, water pumps, and self-cleaning hot-water docks. Fancy? Absolutely. But in a system with that many moving parts, something is bound to give out.
When the LiDAR turret dies, for instance, units throw the dreaded Error 1. Without a straightforward fix from support, owners are left sourcing and installing replacement modules themselves, or paying out of pocket to ship the unit back for service.
Despite all these delicate failure points, factory coverage lasts just 12 months and explicitly excludes power surges, the silent killer of sensitive logic boards.
Shark
Unlike its more complex rivals, Shark keeps things simple: fewer delicate sensors, less fuss, and a straightforward design. Yet, underneath the relative simplicity sit the same old suspects.
iFixit’s troubleshooting for the Shark ION R75 lists worn drive motors, clogged wheels, failed brush motors, and suction-motor failures.
But the real sting for Shark owners comes from the software. Between buggy app updates that drop floor maps, server disconnects, and firmware patches that brick units, the smart features frequently undermine the solid hardware. One frustrated buyer summed up the Shark problem:
“The robot vacuum is fine. The app is incredibly frustrating.”
Another buyer had a rather more damning take:
“Half of the posts on here I see with people having issues with their robot vacuums are Shark owners. Just weird issues that other makers have figured out.”
But if our analysis so far is any indication, that might not be so accurate.
Dyson
Dyson is the premium name in the room, and buyers naturally expect that a four-figure price tag buys absolute peace of mind.
However, the warranty tells a more complicated story.
New Dyson robots carry a two-year warranty, longer than most rivals, but the refurbished units that flood the deal sites ship with as little as a 180-day warranty.
The bigger issue is where you buy it. One owner bought a new Dyson on Amazon expecting full coverage, and after about a year of normal use it quit. Dyson approved a warranty replacement, shipped it, then cancelled the shipment mid-transit:
“If you purchase a Dyson product on Amazon, Dyson may refuse to honor the warranty depending on who the third-party seller is, even though the listing looks like it's connected to the Dyson Store and has Dyson branding all over it.”
Apparently, it’s the same lesson the whole category keeps teaching. Paying more upfront buys you a nicer machine, not an easier claim, and where you buy can slyly void the coverage you thought you paid for.

So, who steps up to save a robot vacuum when the factory warranty packs its bags?
