Where Apple's cover stops and AppleCare's price starts

Apple is strict about defects versus damage. That line is where most claims fail.

Incident typeCovered by Apple?
Manufacturing / hardware defectsYes, but only for 1 year
Accidental drops & damageNo
Liquid damageNo
Power surges / external electrical eventsNot specifically stated
Normal wear & tearNo
Damage from unauthorized repairNo
Works if bought from any storeYes, but proof of purchase may be required

Want cover that survives a drop, not just a defect?

What an out-of-warranty Apple repair really costs

Screen replacement
$129 - $379
Liquid damage
$399 - $799+
Logic board failure
$325 - $800+
Battery service

Hey guys, I have a screen defect on my iPhone 15 Pro. I’ve looked it up and many other people have had it. So i went to my local authorised provider. There the guy examined my phone with a MAGNIFYING GLASS, and said “nope, we can’t take that in because you have this chip on your display.” Mind you it was so small I never knew i even had it there, it’s maybe 0.2mm and only visible in the right conditions. So basically they won’t fix the problem THEY caused just because of the inevitable that happens with every phone? Literally tell me a single person without a single scratch on their phone screen (i also had a case and protector the entire time.) Just a bit of a rant post because it’s so frustrating that they won’t fix their defect because of something only visible under a magnifier.

Hello,
I’m checking if anyone has had an AppleCare claim denied due to the accidental damage being “too severe”?
Here’s the situation.
I believe my M2 MacBook Pro was left on my roof while on a trip to a cabin in the Sierras. Once I got to the cabin I realized what had happened and checked my Find My app. The MacBook showed it was last seen on the highway about an hour away from where we were staying.
I decided my best option was to drive back down the highway looking for it on the side of the road. After a very slow drive down the road scanning the shoulder I found it! It was right where the app said it would be.
The laptop was in one piece but was in VERY rough shape. I did manage to open the lid and press the power button. It booted but nothing happened. Just made the boot up sound.
Since there was so much physical damage I did not want to risk something happening with the batteries. The bottom cover was barely hanging on so I pulled it away and disconnected them. I also used electrical tape to isolate the battery connection and taped the bottom cover back in place.
A couple days later I got it to the Apple Store and I was surprised when the employee told me my claim may be denied due to the extent of the damage.
Is this something anyone else has come across?
I thought this was the situation that AppleCare is for?
TLDR:
I left my M2 MBP on my roof. It got run over but is still in one piece. Apple employee is saying it may not be covered under AppleCare due to the extent of the damage.

Someone spilt their drink on my laptop at school around early June this year and I took it to get fixed at the Apple Store in late June/early July because my school was gonna cover it but I had to chase them up on it + exams etc.
It cost over 1000 quid to fix because the logic board needed replacing and the laptops a 15inch m3, which is a disgusting amount of money which I would never have paid but, like I said, my school covered the cost.
The thing is, a couple days ago, I had my laptop on my bed - wasn’t touching it, just had Spotify open and playing music, and then the screen when black out of nowhere and the music was still playing. The backlight was still on because it was lit but the screen was not showing anything at all. I tried force restarting it a couple times, and the sound it makes when the Apple logo shows up was made and the backlight turned on but still a black screen.
I looked online and saw some things about hardware issues or a messed up flex cable, something along those lines, but it essentially just would not work, so I took it to a local guy to have a look at it.
Spoke to him. He did a force restart, had a quick look and did the thing where you kind of close it and look at it from an angle and he confirmed my suspicions that it is almost defo to do with the repair and that I need to book in an appt before the 90 day warranty is over.
I’ve got one on Thursday, and if everything goes alright, it should be free to repair but if I’m being honest, I know next to nothing about laptops and I’m really stressed that they’re going to chat some bs and end up charging me. I saw how much it costed last time and I’m distraught that my laptops already not working again within two months and that I quite literally can’t think of a single thing I could’ve done to cause it. It was incredibly expensive and I used scholarship money to pay for it because it was supposed to last me through all 5 years of uni but stuff keeps going wrong and it’s out of my control.
I’m really worried because I don’t know what to say to the employees there and how to effectively argue my case. I don’t know anyone who can come with me and get the point across a bit better than I could but I can’t afford to spend a bunch of money on repairing it - I work two jobs 7 days a week to save up for uni, I cannot spare money on expenses like this. Any advice would be massively appreciated, thank you so, so much

I took my Series 10 to my local Apple Store and showed this to a Genius representative. They recognized the issue right away and set up to have the watch sent out for repair. 2 days later I receive an update from the technicians stating they couldn’t replicate the issue. The video attached is the same issue happening after I’ve received the watch back.
Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution with Apple? I have Apple care plus on this as well.
Thanks!

Hey everyone — looking for advice because I feel like Apple is trying to finesse me.
I bought a brand new MacBook Air 13” M4 (Deep Blue) back in March 2025. Over time I noticed the housing/anodized finish started fading and I started seeing online that this is a pretty common issue with this color/finish.
So I took it to Apple on Friday Jan 2, 2026 while it’s still under the 1-year limited warranty.
At the store they told me they couldn’t inspect it in-store, because if they did it would be considered “out of warranty,” so they said they had to send it off to the depot for inspection. I agreed.
Fast forward to today Jan 9th, they call me and say they found water/liquid damage and now they won’t cover anything, and want $548 + tax to repair it.
Here’s what they put in the repair notes:
“There is damage resulting from liquid contact in the keyboard that is not covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty, an AppleCare plan, consumer law, or the original quoted cost of the repair.”
The thing is: • The MacBook works perfectly fine • I have never spilled any water/liquid on it • I only brought it in because of the finish fading on the housing
Now I’m stuck because I didn’t even ask for keyboard repair and they’re using this “liquid contact” thing to basically deny warranty.
Has anyone dealt with this? What’s the best way to dispute it or escalate it? Should I request photos/diagnostic proof from the depot? Any tips on getting this reconsidered?

Top questions about your Apple warranty, answered

How long is the Apple warranty?

Apple’s Limited Warranty generally lasts one year from the original retail purchase date and covers defects in materials and workmanship. A defective battery can be covered, but normal battery aging isn’t. Accidental damage isn’t covered, and Apple’s iPhone/iPad-family and Mac warranties specifically exclude liquid contact.

How do I check my Apple warranty status or find my serial number?

The easiest way is to go to Apple’s Check Coverage page and enter your product’s serial number. You can also sign in with your Apple Account. Need to find the serial number first? Apple has product-specific instructions for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and more.

Does the Apple warranty cover accidental damage?

No. Apple’s standard warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage caused by accidents such as drops. Liquid damage is also specifically excluded for iPhone/iPad-family and Mac products.

Does Apple’s warranty transfer if I sell it or buy the product used?

Buying an Apple product used doesn’t restart the one-year warranty clock. The warranty period runs from the original retail purchase date. Apple’s Limited Warranty doesn’t clearly spell out a general transfer rule for a later owner, and Apple may ask for proof-of-purchase details or other evidence when you request service.

Is an Apple product covered if I bought it from a marketplace seller?

Not necessarily excluded. Apple’s warranty terms don’t say that marketplace or other third-party purchases are automatically invalid. In fact, Apple’s accessory warranty expressly allows claims for products bought from third parties. Eligibility can still depend on the original purchase date, product status, proof of purchase and where the product was originally sold.

Can I buy SureBright Anywhere's extended protection for a product bought from a marketplace seller?

Yes. SureBright Anywhere lets you protect products bought from other online or offline stores, subject to the applicable eligibility and purchase window.

Do I need to register my Apple product for the warranty to apply?

No. Apple’s warranty terms don’t require product registration for coverage. You can check your coverage using the serial number, and Apple may ask for proof of purchase when you need warranty service.

Does the Apple warranty cover liquid damage?

Generally, no. Apple’s iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple TV, HomePod and Apple Vision Pro warranty expressly excludes damage caused by liquid contact, as does the Mac warranty. Apple Watch and Apple/Beats accessories use different exclusion wording, so liquid damage isn’t expressly named in those warranties

What proof of purchase do I need, and what if I lost the receipt?

Apple may ask for proof-of-purchase details when you request warranty service. If Apple’s recorded purchase date needs correcting, it requires original proof of purchase with details such as the device, purchase date, receipt or invoice number, price, reseller information and serial number. Lost your receipt? Contact the seller and ask whether they can provide another purchase record.

What are my options once Apple’s warranty ends?

You can still pay Apple for eligible out-of-warranty repairs. And if you want broader protection from SureBright Anywhere, you need to add it within the applicable purchase window, rather than waiting until Apple’s warranty expires. Depending on the plan, that protection can extend to mechanical and electrical failures, power surges, drops and liquid damage.
